Metagenomics Discovery Challenge (MDC) Course Info

Students will learn to do bio-surveillance on public metagenomic datasets*, identifying fungal (and other micro-eukaryotic), bacterial, archaeal and viral sequences within these datasets.  This will reinforce the fundamentals of computational biology utilizing the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology utilizing computational tools important in determining metagenomics data sets.

Goals

  • Students will work independently or in small teams to develop methods for metagenomic surveillance
  • Students will report findings in a standardized computer-readable format

Learning Objectives

  • Hands-on experience in developing a work product in computational biology and/or related fields
  • Real world problem solving skills working with large datasets
